Coconut Oil – The Best Healthy Fat to Include in Your Diet

While I was researching ways to help heal my son’s immune system and his gut, healthy fats kept coming up as a crucial part of a healing diet. I found this pretty interesting, since the message I had always heard growing up was that low-fat or no-fat was the healthiest way to live. Now that I know so much more about healthy living, it seems that could not be further from the truth. Our bodies and our brains actually need certain fats to function at optimal levels. Without these fats, our digestive system cannot work properly, certain vitamins cannot be absorbed, and we are left with little to no energy.

However, the most important thing to note is that not all fats are created equal. Trans fats should be avoided whenever possible. Most trans fats are found in processed foods, which means that eliminating as much processed foods from your diet as possible will help ensure trans fats are kept to a minimum. Saturated and unsaturated fats from good wholesome food sources (this is key!) are the types of fats we want in our bodies. So no more giving fat a bad name! And that is how, after three  years of finding ways to eat well to heal our bodies, we are now a family that put healthy fats in pretty much everything we cook.

What kind of healthy fats are we using? Well number one on the list is coconut oil. We love the stuff! And let me tell you, I used to be that girl who cooked everything in olive oil, so this was a big change for me. I love using coconut oil because it enhances the flavor of everything I cook while actually making my food even healthier. Coconut oil helps enhance brain function, increases energy, and boosts the immune system, among other things. It can also withstand high heat without breaking down and losing it’s health benefits the way olive oil can. I use coconut oil when cooking meats and vegetables on the stovetop and I usually include it in most of my baked goods. It’s also great for reheating leftovers on the stovetop, as it usually puts more moisture and flavor back into the food (which is especially helpful when I’m trying to reheat meat and other foods that I want my two year old to chew easily).

Over the last couple of years, I’ve searched quite a bit for a coconut oil that I loved that was made using the purest methods.
